About the association
The National Dunbar Horace Mann Alumni Association unites the graduates of Little Rock's two historically Black high schools. Before desegregation, Dunbar was the only high school in Little Rock open to Black students, and for a time it also operated Dunbar Junior College. When Dunbar became a junior high in 1956, Horace Mann High School carried its students forward until 1965.
Alumni of the two schools organized separately for decades. The National Dunbar Alumni Association held its first Reunion of the Classes in 1973 and was chartered in Arkansas in 1978. In July 2009 the Dunbar and Horace Mann associations joined together as one body, a step the association attributed to declining Dunbar membership as its alumni aged. Both school buildings still serve Little Rock today as magnet middle schools.
A Board of Governors leads the association, with national officers elected at the Reunion of the Classes. In 2024 the City of Little Rock honored NDHMAA with the Sustain the Rock award in the nonprofit category.
